Silver Fortune Cookie Earrings

  • Often served as a dessert in Chinese restaurants in the United States and other Western Countries it is not a tradition in China.  It is not clear where the fortune cookie in the United States began but it appears that they most likely originated from cookies Japanese immigrants made in the late 19th or early 20th century.  As far back as the 19th century, a cookie very similar in appearance to the modern fortune cookie was made in Kyoto, Japan, and there is a Japanese Shinto temple tradition of writing random fortunes on small strips of paper, called omikuji. This cookie was slightly different, they were larger and contained sesame and miso instead of vanilla and butter.  They did contain a omikuji (fortune) however, and the small slip of paper was wedged into the bend of the cookie.
