Lei are known worldwide as a symbol of Aloha—representing welcome, love, respect, gratitude, and appreciation. Great care is taken in gathering the materials used to create a lei. Once collected, the materials are carefully prepared and skillfully fashioned into the final piece. Throughout this process, the mana (spirit) of the creator is believed to be sewn or woven into the lei itself.

 

Because of this, giving a lei is more than offering a gift; it is giving a part of yourself. Likewise, receiving a lei means accepting a part of the creator and the spirit with which it was made. Beyond its beauty, the lei carries deep cultural and spiritual significance.

 

The Aloha Spirit

 

The lei also represents the spirit of Aloha, which reflects the values and way of life of the Hawaiian people. Aloha is more than a greeting—it is a belief in sharing kindness, compassion, respect, and harmony in every aspect of life. At its heart, Aloha means living in unity with one another and with the environment around us.

 

The Aloha spirit definition:

 

Akahai, [ah kah hai’], meaning kindness to be expressed with tenderness

Lokahi, [loh’ kah hee], meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony

Olu`olu,   [oh’ loo oh’ loo], meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness

Ha`aha`a,  [hah’ ah hah’ ah], meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty

Ahonui,  [ah  hoh nui’], meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance

Graduation Ribbon Lei:

 

For graduation lei please contact Miyoko at miyokodesignsco@gmail.com with the length and colors you need.  I will let you know if I have the color/s in stock or if I need to order it.  I will give you an estimate on how long it will take to make and send your ribbon lei.   May is a very busy month for graduation lei and I may not be able to take your order.

 

Ribbon in stock:  If I have the ribbon in stock, please order ASAP or allow at least 2 weeks prior to when you need it, this includes shipping time.

 

Ribbon not in stock: If I don’t have the colors needed, I will look for the colors.  If I find the color/s needed I will try to order it, so it will take longer to get your order done.
